The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is a 24-hr FREE community service that treats all Australian native wildlife. The hospital includes a veterinary facility with an intensive care room and laboratory, outdoor holding facilities, and an orphan enclosure designed specifically for hand-raised koalas to develop climbing skills and minimise contact with human carers before being released back into the bush.

Free vet consultations are available to all registered wildlife carers.

• Over 7500 native animals were admitted in 2011
• Up to 100 emergency phone calls are received every day during busy seasons, and more than 100 calls are received every week during the rest of the year
• Approximately 70% of patients are victims of car accidents or domestic dog and cat attacks
• Up to 65 animals across 11 species are admitted to the hospital on a single day
• Over 100 koalas are in care at any one time during busy seasons, with an average of 70 koalas coming through the hospital every month
• The most commonly admitted wildlife is birds
• The average cost to treat an animal is $150, however koalas are an exception costing on average $1200 each
